Problem(Paige)Why do the dry ice cause the reactions that you get when you mix it together with just a few other ingredients/materials?
Hypothesis(Erik):The dry ice act the way it do because it is very cold and the surroundings is warm so it cause to react because of the temperature.
Materials(Paige):
Dry Ice
Erlenmeyer flask
Camera
Detergent
2 liter bottle
Gloves
Circle Hammer
Food Coloring
Plastic Vials
1 Balloon
Water
Procedures(Gaby): Activity One:1. Get all of your materials, which is, your dry ice, erlenmyer flask, camera, 2 liter bottle, gloves, the circle hammer, and food coloring.
2. Break the dry ice into smaller pieces, (hurry before the ice desolves)
3. pour a good amount of water in the elenmyer flask
4. put a good squirt of detergent into the erlenmyer flask
5. squirt 2 drops of food coloring into the erlynmyer flask
6. put 2 small pieces of dry ice and watch the reaction . Activity 2:1. Get the dry ice
2. Break the ice
3. Get the container that you will be using.
4.. put about 1/3 of water in to the container
4.. squirt 1 drop of food coloring into the container
5. put a big chunk of dry ice into the container
6. put the cap on top of the container
7. watch the reaction Activity 3: 1. get the ice
2. break ice into a big chunk. (don't let it be too big)
3. Get a 2 liter container (preferred)
fill container 1/2 way up
3. put in 3 drops of food coloring
4.put in alot of dry ice
5. put balloon on top of the bottle(hold it)
6. watch reaction
Observations(Victoria): Activity One:1. The substance was bubbly.
2.The substance did not come out blue it was clear.
3. The substance came out long.
4.The substance was stuck together.
The substance is reacting
Activity Two:1.The Substance started to smoke as soon as we put the top on.
2.The substance made the top pop off but it wasn't so loud.
3. It was a smokey like substance
4. You could see the dry ice becoming smaller.
Activity Three:1. As soon as we put the dry ice pieces in the container you could see it immediately reacting.
2. When we put on the ballon it started to get bigger because of the smoke.
3. The ballon popped because of the smoke.
4. The substance did not come out the bottle like the other activities.
Conclusions(Erik) The dry ice took place in the process of sublimation which is from a solid to a gas. All the activities are physical changes because the changes goes straight to a gas instead of going through water process. An endothermic reaction is taking place because the dry ice was cooler than the surroundings and it was absorbing the heat causing it to react the way it did. The elements C02 (Carbon Dioxide) was in this investigation. Some real world uses of this substance is the process of breathing photosynthesis, soda water, and earth's atmosphere. My hypothesis was right because the temperature in the room was way warmer than the dry ice substance so it reacted that way.
